  • Large extended families planning reunions or holidays will find these helpful for labeling seating, gift exchanges, or assigning roles when multiple cousins share similar names or generation levels.

  • Parents teaching children about family lineage benefit from these charts as interactive tools to explain how they’re connected to distant relatives during storytime or educational activities.

Which format should I download?

PDF

The PDF format is ideal because it preserves layout precision and ensures compatibility with printers for physical use. Choose this format if you plan to print charts for family gatherings, binders, or scrapbooks—it maintains sharp lines and crisp text, even when enlarged for presentations. Avoid editable formats here since these charts focus on static, accurate visuals rather than customization.

How to use this Cousin Chart template

What is a cousin chart and how does it work?

A cousin chart is a grid or diagram that shows how two relatives are connected through a common ancestor. By finding each person's relationship to that shared ancestor and crossing the rows and columns, you can name the exact relationship, such as second cousin or first cousin once removed.

What does first cousin once removed mean on a cousin chart?

Removed refers to a difference in generation. First cousins share grandparents and sit in the same generation. Once removed means one person is a generation higher or lower, so your first cousin's child is your first cousin once removed. The chart counts these generation gaps for you.

How do you figure out the degree of cousin relationship?

Find the closest common ancestor, then count how many generations each person is from that ancestor. The smaller number, minus one, gives the cousin degree, while any difference between the two counts becomes the removal. A chart turns this counting into a quick lookup.
