What does an amortization schedule show?

An amortization schedule breaks down each loan payment into its principal and interest portions and shows the remaining balance after every payment is made. It reveals exactly how much of each installment reduces the debt versus paying interest, and how the overall balance shrinks across the loan's life.

How is the interest portion of each payment calculated?

Each period's interest is the outstanding balance multiplied by the periodic interest rate for that loan. Whatever remains of the fixed payment then reduces the principal, so early payments are mostly interest while later ones pay down far more principal as the outstanding balance falls over time.

Why do early loan payments go mostly toward interest?

Because interest is charged on the outstanding balance, which is at its highest right at the start, early payments cover a large interest share and very little principal. As the balance steadily declines, the interest portion shrinks and a growing share of each payment reduces the principal.
